Memory
Control what is remembered across chats and how personal memories can be stored as private Markdown files.
What belongs where?
| Context | Purpose | Where to manage it |
|---|---|---|
| Current conversation | Messages and working context for that chat | The conversation |
| Personal cross-chat memory | Lasting preferences for you in the current organization | Chat settings → Memory |
| Agent instructions, files and memory | Context for that particular agent | The agent's settings and files |
Personal memory is not an organization-wide knowledge feed. Temporary chats do not read or save it.
Turn memory on and choose a rule
- Open chat settings and Cross-chat memory.
- Enable Use cross-chat memory.
- Select when memories may be saved:
| Rule | Behavior |
|---|---|
| Only on explicit request | Ask directly for something to be remembered |
| Confirm every memory | Review and accept or reject proposed memories |
| Automatic | The assistant can save useful lasting information under the selected settings |
Changing modes does not approve pending proposals. The model may judge that a detail is temporary or not useful to remember; do not assume every conversation creates a memory.
The frequency setting limits new memories or proposals across chats. It is not a timer that automatically saves something every hour or day.
Review and remove memories
Saved entries and pending proposals appear in the same settings. Use the available edit, confirm, reject, download or delete actions. Turning memory off keeps saved entries but stops their use in new requests. Use deletion when you want to remove the entries themselves.
Deleting a memory does not rewrite old chat messages or erase an export you previously downloaded.
Store memory in your private Knowledge Base
- 1Choose a writable private workspace
- 2Select a folder
- 3Save the location
- 4Review the managed memory files
Choose Private folder in memory storage. Shared workspaces are not eligible. The entry file MEMORY.md links to the managed memory files; unrelated Markdown files in the folder are not automatically imported.
Editing or deleting a managed memory file changes future chat memory. These files are not merely a read-only export. Avoid putting unrelated documents into them.
Changing the storage location keeps the old files. Check the old private folder and remove unwanted copies yourself. If the selected folder becomes unavailable, fix the location or select built-in storage; do not assume a failed write was saved.
Good memory content
Keep stable preferences, recurring conventions and useful background. Avoid credentials, unnecessary personal information about other people and short-lived task progress. Agent work files are a better place for a task's detailed notes.
